With my BX and now my 4115/46 I have ripped up roots as large as a big mans arms.... 14-15 inches, but stalled on leg size chunks.
No problem, though.... just dig farther out from the trunk. When you get a trench all the way around the tree put a chain on one of those roots and turn that sucker like the hands on a clock. Somewhere between 6 and 9 o'clock it will pop loose from the tap root and come out of the ground. ....

I tried to dig out a 3 or 4 inch tree with my bx23 and got hung up on a root that was only about 2 or 3 inches thick.
The hoe would stall or the tractor would move but I couldn't break the root.
Since it was my first try at doing something like this I must be doing something wrong; but what ??
....

It also depends a lot on the soil type and condition. I've found that hiting trees with the loader bucket at about chest height will often knock them over, breaking the roots free. It also helps if you let out a loud yell like "BEHOLD MY POWER"! while you are doing it. ....

I think that of course much of this has to do with Tractor size and technique as has been pointed out already.
Another thing that changes things is the tree type. For example cottonwood trees are very soft and have shallow roots. A pin oak is hard as a rock and has a very deep tap root. An inch in an oak tree is much stronger then several inches in another tree variety. ....
